A Modern Viola From 1992 By Geoffrey Ovington. 16 5/8”

Geoffrey Ovington (1945-2017) was a celebrated luthier who studied with James Coggin and devoted himself entirely to making instruments from 1980 in Shushan, NY. He was an active member of the Violin Society of America who placed well at the VSA competitions in 1993 and 2012: Silver Medal for Tone (violin) - 1993; (2) Silver Medals for Tone (cello, quartet) - 2012. Beyond his woodwork, Ovington and his wife started the Dionondeowa Wildlife Sanctuary and School which set aside and protects 200 acres along the Battenkill River.

This personal model measures in at 421mm, or just a shade under 16 5/8” in back length, with a wide almost boxy shape that delivers a broad, punchy sound with a darker, articulate quality; demonstrating a defined concept in sound and depth of character in both timbre and overall craftsmanship. The scroll, also squared but shapely, with a concentricity to the volutes that almost teases at the older Bohemian school.
