Three-Star Heinz Dolling Violin Bow in Silver & Ox Horn, Germany.

Heinz Dolling (1913-2001) apprenticed and worked in the Dolling Family workshop in Markneukirchen under the direction of his father, Otto Dolling and worked with Paul Sackendorf before WWII. He cleared his “Master” examinations in 1947 and established an independent workshop in Wernitzgrün, Saxony, relocating again to Erlbach, Germany in 1967. He was awarded a gold medal at the 1969 Luttich Trade Fair and saw his family celebrate 100 years of bowmaking in 1998. Michael Dolling, the family’s fourth generation continues their traditions today.

An exhibition worthy example of Heinz Dolling’s personal work; a white ox-horn, silver mounted violin bow with an octagonal stick of pernambuco that he chose to leave relatively under darkened to showcase both the flame and striping of the exceptional material; the three-piece adjuster, with abalone rectangles set into the facet faces of the ebony center. The frog features a Parisian eye with a thicker, silver ring. The bow is well balanced and demonstrates strength, flexibility and technical response at  58.2 grams.
