An Italian Violin By Giustino Dal Canto, 1933.
Giustino Dal Canto was born in 1902 in Gemenos, southern France. He moved to Italy at a young age and eventually established his workshop in Castelfranco di Sotto, Pisa, where he became well-known for producing high-quality violins, cellos, and violas. His instruments, often praised for their robust sound and elegant aesthetic, reflect both traditional Italian craftsmanship and his own unique style. Dal Canto is credited with creating numerous instruments throughout his career, with some estimates placing the total number made at several hundred. Dal Canto’s violins remain highly valued on the market today, sought after by collectors and performers alike.
This highly characteristic example from 1933 presents in good condition for a violin nearing 100 years of age, with no repairs, nor any damages to speak of save for bushings to the scroll. Fresh fittings and setup, with a vibrant golden-yellow oil varnish over Italian tone woods. It’s sound, possessing a very vocal quality, rich in color and easy in lyricism, with flexibility and well-defined palate.
