An Early 20th Century Violin by Hans Schirmer, Repaired By G. Dashner In 2001.

An attractive early 20th century German violin by Hans Schirmer in Adorf. Schirmer was a well regarded maker of distinctive craftsmanship often compared to Roth, considered active between 1910 and 1930. This highly characteristic example of his more refined production is stamped to the inside belly and also bears a repair label dated 2001 from G. Dashner in Charlestown, New Hampshire.

Whereas Schirmer violins have appreciated to command valuations as high as $15,000, this violin has been marked down 40% in lieu of Dashner’s repairs which include material added to the edge on the lower treble top, two small cracks at the lower eye and wing of the treble f hole and a soundpost crack that extends the length of the instrument. Dashner’s interior work is actually quite good, evidenced by the clean cleats and tidy patchwork, but the lengthy crack was likely long open before he tended to it as it is garishly visible on the outside. Nonetheless, a well-voiced violin of fine craftsmanship that is sure to satisfy any musician for whom budget would make a pristine example unattainable.
