A Rare French Violin by Louis Moitessier, Circa 1800

A well preserved example of Parisian trained Mirecourt Master, Louis Moitessier (1761-1840) of desirable proportions and representing the peak of his craft; branded “Moitessier a Paris” to the inside of the back by the maker, and presented with a Raffin certificate which dates the specimen to 1800. Whereas many violins from this era and region demonstrate somewhat larger proportions, this personal model by Moitessier boasts a back length of 357mm and features a figural head in the shape of a chimera, a lion, if you will. In balance with the character and careful precision of craftsmanship, the figural head too serves to elevate the artisanal quality of Moitessier’s more refined work to a status that would befit both collector and performer alike.

Sold with Rampal Certificate.
