A Canadian Violin from 1901 By J.W. Hinchcliffe.

John Wesley Hinchcliffe (1868-1932) was a well known violin maker from Ottawa who apprenticed with Jerome Bonaparte Squier (1838-1912) in Boston; he is regarded as Sqiuer’s most successful protege other than Squier’s nephew, Victor Carroll Squier (1866-1949). Incidentally, he passed away from injuries sustained from a car accident in 1932 while visiting Hollywood, Florida. In pristine condition, his instruments are valued as high as $10,000 and consistently boast convincing voices. This particular violin has sustained numerous repairs before arriving at Cohen Violins. While unsightly, they are assuredly stable, and certainly haven’t harmed the instrument’s tone, clarity and power. This is an ideal player’s violin - a quality instrument by a known maker for a musician with a limited budget.
