A Rare Violin by Giuseppe & Antonio Gagliano, 1798. (Composite)

A rare and richly voiced composite violin by the brothers Gagliano, Giuseppe (Joseph) and Antonio (fl. 1780 – 1800) dating to 1798, with second quarter 19th century ribs and back, also Naples; offered with a dendrochronology report from Peter Ratcliff and certificate from Florian Leonhardt. Together, representing two of the four violin making sons of Nicolo Gagliano. Although Antonio was outshined by his brother, Giuseppe’s more masterful and highly characteristic aesthetic, the two often collaborated at the height of the family workshop, crafting instruments that would in no small part define the 19th century Naples school.
