A Fine Gold and Tortoise English Viola Bow By Garner Wilson.

Garner Wilson (1944-2013) was one of the last master craftsmen to be trained at the famed W.E. Hill & Sons, where he began working at just 16 years old, and under the tutorage of both William Watson and Arthur Bultitude, with input from William Retford. He established himself in Suffolk in 1969 and settled in Dingwall, Scotland exactly 20 years later. Wilson’s Hill bows are stamped with the number 12, and his personal work is easily recognizable both by a distinct style and his trademark double ring eyes to the faces of his frogs. This example features both gold mounts and a tortoise shell frog, with tortoise facets to the inside of the matching three piece button, representing his highest quality and most collectible work.

At a balanced weight of 74.4 grams, this bow draws a broad yet elegantly defined sound, with a colorful, silky almost buttery quality to the texture; easy, consistent spiccato with effortless tracking, ample bite and just enough resistance to accomplish the ever desirable growl on command. Suitable for both discerning professionals and collectors alike.
