An Unusual German Violin After Rigat Rubus, Circa 1900.

Rigat Rubus was a Russian violin maker about which little is known, save he was born in 1850 and produced numerous experimental violins. These instruments are sought after as curiosities, wall hangers, but are well loved by some circles of fiddlers, for which their sound is ideal. An original Rubus violin typically also presents with a bulbous scroll, swollen terribly, as if suffering from a severe food allergy. The edge work is curious, curiously absent, as the top rounds around into the ribs, with exaggerated corners and a convex quality to the joints at the corners. As you might note, the scroll on this particular violin is not as I described. Rather, this violin is a German reproduction, dating to 1900. Perhaps, just a few years earlier. To much amazement, an original Rubus sold at auction for just over $2000, but these reproductions are easily enough found in various states of disrepair for a few hundred dollars. They are notoriously difficult to repair after suffering trauma and it is uncommon to find one with good workmanship in decent condition. This violin has a fresh setup and is equipped with Dominant Strings; photographed without a chin rest for your viewing pleasure.
