An Interesting Violin Attributed to Antonio Piccagliani, Modena 1927.

There are few published examples of Antonio’s work to compare against his father, Armando, with whom he collaborated. Having said that, he would have been 13 years of age when this violin is made, and while there are some similarities, the only details which might indicate a younger maker are faint “x” marks under the varnish on the outer surface of each part, indicating direction during making. An attractive, well-made instrument, with no damages, and minor wear to the varnish along the heel and shoulder bout commensurate with higher level playing. One piece back measuring a perfect 356mm of light, irregular flame, with matching selections for the ribs, but more tightly flamed maple of another source for the headstock, and very resonant spruce for the table. Its voice is lyrical and bright with supple quality and clearly ringing overtones that make it both pleasant to listen to and gratifying to play.
