An Exquisite Viola Bow By C.W. Knopf, Early 19th Century.
An exquisite early 19th century viola bow of tremendous playing properties by the legendary German achetier, Christian Wilhelm Knopf (1767 – 1837); mounted with a copy of the original frog and button by Grunke. This composite bow offers a final balanced weight of 69.4 grams which belies the firm strength of its stick, and draws a focused core sound with immediate response, ringing clarity, and a rich somewhat woody timbre.
C.W. Knopf was the patriarch of a dynasty of highly esteemed bowmakers which collectively value higher than any other German achetiers for their personal works. Meticulously detailed workmanship, with highly imaginative artistry inspired by his French counterparts. Namely, Persoit, Pajeot, and Gaulard; decorated bows, with inlays, carvings, and clever use of shell in a highly distinct, immediately recognizable personal style. His bows are highly coveted by collectors and performers alike, and historically mark another development in the evolution of the bow - he is often credited as the inventor of the metal eyelet.
