Christopher Dungey stands out as one of the most recognizable and highly decorated American cello makers working today, having completed more than 100 cellos since choosing to specialize exclusively on their construction in 1991. A graduate of the Newark School of Violin Making in England, his storied background cites employment at Jacques Francais Rare Violins in New York, both Beare’s and W.E. Hill & Sons in England; he worked for Robert Cauer, Thomas Metzler, and Hans Weisshar in California before establishing his own independent workshop for the first time in 1986. Dungey considers himself a lifelong learner and has regularly attended the Oberlin Acoustics workshop since 2004, and is a current member of the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers. He creates cellos by commission only, has a waitlist, and charges $60,000 for a new instrument.
