A Fine American Cello by Arlie Moran, 1968.

Like most other examples of the fine instruments produced by Arlie Moran, this cello bears a label of attribution to another maker. In particular, Eric Eugen Scholl. I am not alone in being rendered incredulous as to why a maker with such refined grace and style, capable of such precision and detail would elect to use any alias, let alone many. Perhaps, he believed they would fetch more, but it seems that many were passed off as the work of others. As such, it is impossible to say how many he made without his personal records.

Based on provenance, this cello likely dates to the late 60’s and has been a mainstay of a Hollywood studio cellist since he acquired it from Metzler’s in California. It presents in immaculate condition, boasting a voice of immediate presence, with power, projection, depth and modularity of color, and of course, a sublime clarity. Appraisals from Cohen Violins and Metzler’s.
