A German Viola Ascribed to Mathias Hornsteiner, 1873. 16”

A late 19th century German viola hailing from the Mittenwald workshop of Neuner-Hornsteiner with an ascribed date of 1873; featuring a deeply textured darker brown varnish over a golden-green ground, with shading and antiquing, and flecks of red over a spruce soundboard of medium grain from the Karwendel mountains and a two piece back of highly attractive figure, with well matched ribs and scroll. This viola has a back length of 406 mm, or exactly 16,” making it very comfortable in the hand, with a characterful and well seasoned sound of ample depth and flexibility. Indeed, close to 150 years old as well as a testament to the tradition and trade of both the Hornsteiner family and Mittenwald at large.
