A Fine Viola by Leo Aschauer; Mittenwald, 1955. 16”

Leo Aschauer (b. 1892) served as the director of the Mittenwald school of Violin Making in Germany for 37 years. This 16” viola was meticulously crafted in 1955 from premium tone woods sourced from the Karwendel mountains in. The even lines of medium grained spruce and deep flames of the two piece maple back are illuminated and beautifully brought out by a luminous golden-orange varnish. It’s voice is powerful and precise, with crisp, immediate, and even response across the strings and registers; deep and sonorous with a bright but rather warm edge to the sound that is sure to win over even the most demanding of musicians.
