A Fine 7/8 Violin By Paul Knorr

Paul Knorr (1882-1977) has a reputation for masterful, artisanal craftsmanship of such distinction that his instruments regularly command prices of $20,000-$28,000, a feat that few other 20th century German makers have achieved. His training began under the tutorage of his father, Albert who was himself a pupil of Max Dolling. Paul Knorr then worked in Breslau and Berlin, where he honed his restoration skills and became foreman at the workshop of Robert Beyer. He returned to Markneukirchen and established an independent workshop in 1921, where he produced numerous instruments of dazzling quality after Stradivarius, Guarneri, and Guadagnini and presided over many higher quality trade instruments. 

This stunning, petite example of Paul Knorr’s personal work dates to 1938 and belies a powerful, well seasoned voice with immediate response and resonant overtones, complete with modularity and an overall quality of purity and refinement. At 348mm, this “ladies violin” qualifies as a 7/8, lending an ease of play and unparalleled comfort for any demanding player seeking a slightly smaller body. It presents in fantastic condition, with no damages, nor any old repairs, less a few small signs of use acquired over its 85 years.
