An Early 19th C. Mittenwald Violin Attributed To Josef Sailor, 1824.

This early 19th century Mittenwald violin is nearing 200 years of age and bears a personal inscription to the inside of the top attributing it to Josef Sailor in 1824, written in old German. Though examples of Sailor’s work are far and few between, his work is noted to be elegant, refined, and more similar to that of the better worksmen of the Hornsteiner family, which can certainly be said for this violin.

The choice of tonewoods is excellent, with a characteristically translucent red varnish that elevates the overall aesthetic and demonstrates very little wear for its age. The back features a tightly flamed maple, matchbooked in two pieces, with more plain selections for the ribs and head.

The instrument presents in excitingly well preserved condition, and has recently been the beneficiary of a new neck, upon which the scroll is grafted. It’s restoration also saw the replacement of the bass bar to modern specification to great result. With a back length of 356mm this antique violin boasts a voice that is both immediately responsive and well seasoned.
