A German Viola By Karl Wenzel Fuchs, 16.5.”
Hailing from a long line of luthiers from the Czech village of Schonbach, German violin maker Wenzel Fuchs was one of many forced to relocate from his home after World War II. He found himself in the Franconian region, resettling in the town of Eltersdorf, near Erlangen, where he continued to create instruments of masterful quality and aesthetic appeal.
This 16.5” Guarneri patterned Fuchs viola bearing the makers label was made in the third quarter of the 20th century and presents in pristine condition, with no damages, nor any repairs; featuring a moderately grained spruce for the top and tightly flamed two-piece maple back of 420mm, with matching ribs and head. It boasts a broad voice with commanding presence and pleasing resistance to heavier strokes.
