Cohen Violins Guarneri-Tertis Model Violas, 2024. 15.5”

Custom built to our specifications, these violas were made on a Guarneri pattern with widened lower and middle bouts, inspired by but not directly proportional to the Tertis design. They feature a slightly higher overstand (the height of the neck rising above the top where it meets the body, to allow for easier facilitation and shifting around the upper bouts without stress on the wrist. Lightly antiqued but masterfully shaded spirit varnish of chocolate color giving way to a light golden brown, applied smoothly over carefully selected European tone-woods. In particular, featuring a consistent grace through the round bead of the edge, proportional to the depth of the purfling channel. The overall result is not only aesthetically pleasing but delivers a voice of tenor depth that offers both immediate response and well balanced resistance and flexibility.
