An Anonymous German Violin, Circa 1850.
Every feature and detail of craftsmanship on this violin earns a nod towards mid 19th century Vogtland violin making, from the selection of materials, to the translucent golden glow of the thin varnish, the loose outline and corners which barely extend past the joints of the ribs, flat edge work and squat f holes with sharp, exaggerated notches, to the turns in the volutes of the scroll and the shape of the eye. All of these features suggest Markneukirchen, circa 1850. Though presented as an anonymous violin, the pronounced overhang of the edge leading into the root of the neck on both the top and back below the button suggests at least a passing influence from the Voigt family.
