A Good German Violin From Klingenthal, Circa 1870-1880; a charming instrument of some 150 years with a highly nuanced aesthetic, antiqued to great detail as well as naturally seasoned by generations of performers now and presenting in rather good condition save for one repaired crack descending from the bass f-hole and worn corners. Interesting choice of spruce - wide at the center and narrowing towards the outer edges, with fluted wings to the f-holes. The varnish, a deeper brown, giving way to a lustrous orange over a golden ground, rich with texture and patina, and finally brought together by a wider craquelure.  The back, measuring 357mm, of lighter, irregular flame, with matching ribs and headstock. Volutes, at once typical to but also of the better variety from that era of German making. Antique carved pegs with likewise matching fittings, finished with a new setup and vision strings to great effect.

Its voice is at once crisp and clear, powerful with flexibility and enough resistance to modulate character and shape phrasing to one’s delight. Altogether, quite pleasing and sure to satisfy the professional on a budget and advancing musician alike.
