Peter White, a violin maker from Albuquerque, New Mexico has made more than 260 violins since first embarking on the vocation in 1977. In 1980 he received a Fullbright Fellowship to continue his studies under the mentorship of Jan Pawlikowski and Wladyslaw Stopka in Cracow Poland. While in Poland, Peter also studied with Rajmund and Barbara Swirek in Katowice. He returned to New Mexico and opened Old World Violins in Albuquerque, from which he sponsored the 1990 Violin Society of America Convention and Competition. In 2008 he founded the New Mexico Musical Heritage Program at the University of New Mexico, where he also worked as a professor for thirty eight years; the program was geared towards teaching Native American and Latin students how to make violins, but was open to all. In 2010, his Andrea Amati copies were awarded gold medals at the first International Contest for Antiqued Instruments in Cremona-Pisogna. He has won numerous silver and gold medals from the Arizona Violin Makers Association. He retired to St. Petersburg Florida in 2020, but continues to enjoy his craft and teaches violin making on Periscope.
