By fifteen, he was working as an apprentice at Indianapolis Violins, an opportunity he enjoyed for three years before attending The Violin Making School of America. Jordan has since worked for Salt Lake City based luthier John Young, and is currently making his own violins based on traditional Cremonese working methods, creating instruments with exceptional tonal qualities and playability. He primarily focuses on crafting modern instruments, concentrating on personal models, and bench copies inspired by specific instruments and makers.

This Violin from early 2019 is one of such inspiration, patterned after Guarneri Del Gesu, and antiqued in typical Hess fashion. Elliot, England - 1927. Although I haven’t found any references to this particular maker in any of my research, the violin does boast a willow back, a hallmark found more commonly in and most associated with the English school. The scroll features faux bushings and a fake graft, with a deep, elegant throat and a smaller, delicate head. The instrument was heavily antiqued, including a fake inclusion ascending from the lower edge of the back, with distress and craqueleur, probably accomplished by charcoal rubbed into the deep orange of the rather pleasing, translucent varnish. The pattern too is interesting, with sloped shoulders and rather slender bouts, deceptively lending the violin a longer look. In fact, the back length is only 355mm; finished with matching jujube fittings which feature unstained boxwood accents and Evah Pirazzi strings. It’s voice is remarkably sweet and clear, and would be most highly desirable for a serious chamber musician, in my opinion.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0509/7504/7879/products/9D631955-C8F9-4266-9E92-96B3C6B7D163.jpg?v=1606446111
a-modern-hungarian-violin-by-laszlo-horvath-1976
A Modern Hungarian Violin by Laszlo Horvath, 1976

youtubeembedcode.com/de/

buy fast web traffic

A Modern Hungarian violin by the hand of Laszlo Horvath, 1976; in a good state of preservation for its 44 years, less some typical wear from use and a small repaired crack ascending from the outside of the treble F-hole. I find it unseemly, but not terribly intrusive, and let sleeping dogs rest, so to speak. The violin’s original pegs are in good working order and it has been refitted with a French Aubert Deluxe bridge, and Dominant strings. Moderately flamed maple for the back and sides, with a tight even grained spruce top, and a concentric scroll with rounded eyes; lustrous golden yellow varnish. Someone put some love into it and got it singing again and things seemed to be going well for a while, but the going got tough and it literally lost its head. Cleaned and inspected, the Viola is equipped with an old stock Aubert bridge, a decorated tailpiece of 115mm, black Wittner style fine tuner with a gold cap, with a fresh set of Evah Gold strings and an Ohrenform chinrest.

I was pleasantly surprised by the strength of this little viola. King made 20 violins and 11 violas, of which this was the 4th. By imitating the high arched and deep bodied designs of the old Brecian Masters, King successfully compensated size without sacrificing sound. This was his answer to the enormous and unwieldy ‘Wagnerian’ violas; full bodied, with cavernous sonority and clarity across the registers. Featuring an unremarkable and rather plain neck stock in stark contrast to the beautiful birds eye maple of the back and ribs and fine selection of spruce for the top, with a hard, golden-honey colored oil varnish of glowing translucence. In the same way that Chinese instruments have flooded the marketplace today and set a standard for entry level commercial instruments, 19th century making in Markneukirchen flourished and fueled the expansion of the classical music industry. By the end of the 19th century, Markneukirchen alone produced upwards of two hundred thousand violins for worldwide export annually, half of which were bound for the United States.

This 17” viola has been professionally played for decades and was made on a pattern after Antonio Stradivari, a 1700 model that boasts both original brand stamps and internal label; crafted in 1955, just two years after the Ernst Heinrich Roth firm relocated to Bubenruth as a result of communist rule after WWII. It features a high quality medium grained spruce top with tight, pronounced flamed maple from the alps for the back, with matching selections for the ribs and scroll. It demonstrates delicate fluting and well executed purfling close to the edge, finished in an attractive golden brown varnish of pleasing translucence. It is remarkably responsive to changes in pressure and articulation; highly resonant, with a well balanced palette of equal brilliance and depth. This viola is 65 years old and in a good state of preservation, less some typical varnish wear from heavy use, and is currently set up with Vision strings and a Jargar ‘A’. At just $3,500, this viola is certainly worthy of trial from any discerning player who would typically expect to spend significantly more to satisfy their needs.

Ernst Heinrich Roth I (1877-1948) was well versed as a musician and studied under several violin makers across Europe, including his father, Gustav Robert Roth, who established the family workshop in 1873.
