Delightful. Firstly, the back, sides and scroll are fashioned from Sycamore. For those of you that don’t know, these facets are usually made from maple. Sycamore can be roughly one-third less dense than maple, but it’s use in violin making is not unprecedented, although uncommon. Most examples of such are from England and the United States. Although this particular violin bears no label, I do believe it is American work in between 70 and 90 years of age. The violin has been cleaned to a point; there is so much texture to the varnish and an absolutely delicious craqueleur which I wished to mitigate without wearing away.

“Sycamore” has been refitted with a fresh set of rosewood pegs, and also received a fingerboard planing, a new nut, a freshly fitted soundpost and a French three-tree Despiau Superieur bridge, with a carved button, titanium tailgut, an engraved ebony tailpiece, rosewood chinrest, and Evah Pirazzi strings (with a Goldbrokat E). Wracked in ruin and only beginning to rebuild in 1946, Europe lay in waste from the tumult and horrors of WWII. Georg Heinl first apprenticed with his father Joseph, and uncle Johann, in Vienna, where he earned his Violin Making Diploma in 1911. He began working for W.E. This is a rare opportunity to own a fine violin with a readily available provenance in ownership. I am earnestly grateful to Ric for his welcoming attitude and sharing this information openly. Aside, Georg’s shop forman, Ernest R. Otto did a considerable amount of preparation work in constructing the violins and added his own label to the upper block, unbeknownst to Georg, and tell of friendly contention in the workplace - who did more work, if you will.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0509/7504/7879/products/image_96e12abb-f91f-4a74-87e3-876abf66f44d.jpg?v=1621370317
a-contemporary-american-viola-by-todd-goldenberg-2014-16-1-4
A Contemporary American Viola By Todd Goldenberg, 2014. 16 1/4.”

Todd Goldenbberg’s path to becoming a violin maker began with a degree in botany from the University of New Hampshire. Bodor joined his father in the employ of Moennig in 1966 and was highly regarded for his work. Most particularly, for his cellos which became a staple of the symphony scenes of both New York and New Jersey. Unfortunately, Bodor discontinued the making of cellos around 1990. As such, these instruments have become a rare treat because their owners are rarely willing to part with them. I am absolutely delighted to present and offer this Montagnana patterned cello by Bodor for audition and sale. More exciting yet, the two-piece back is made from a birds-eye maple, with matching ribs. This denser and rather attractive wood lends the cello a desirable strength and projection, with an immediate bite and crisp edge to its colorful voice. Sometimes, even confused outright with the Voigtland Mecha of Markneukirchen, which lies some 500 miles South East. It was home to several prolific dynasties, and a great many highly revered makers, including those of the Schonfelder family. Johann Adam Schonfelder (1707-1763) was relatively young when he expired, still at the height of his prowess, so to speak. Just two years before his passing, and at the age of 54, he crafted this fine violin, masterfully imbuing it with a rather personal and highly developed sense of style. Though Henley cites the younger Johann George Schonfelder (1750-1824) as “Undoubtedly the most skilled craftsman of his family…,” neither the craftsmanship nor complexity and maturity of this violin’s voice leaves one wanting in the slightest. At some 260 years of age, it boasts a level of character and refinement of such a special quality, the sort that one may not be able to articulate but most nonetheless acknowledge, that reinforces whimsical notions about performing on older instruments.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0509/7504/7879/products/image_50b96c29-baf0-4dd6-a2a6-92fd02e02877.jpg?v=1666150766
a-french-violin-by-francois-caussin-about-1850
A Desirable French Violin By Francois Caussin, About 1850.

Francois Caussin (1794-1866), the patriarch of the Caussin family renowned for crafting highly regarded copies of the Italian masters, was born in Rouvres-la-Chétive. He learned his trade under the direction of Louis Gaillard in Mirecourt before joining the ranks of Didier Nicolas D’Aine’s workshop in Paris and establishing himself independently around 1825 in the Northern French town of Neufchateau. His work is most commonly executed after Amati and Stradivari models but also follows Grancino and Seraphin, exhibiting a wide range of experimentation and influence by closer contemporaries such as J.B. Vuillaume, most notably in his thin, highly shaded and antiqued varnish that remains highly distinctive but many find not entirely dissimilar. Though his pupils are numerous, Francois’ most successful protege and eventual successor was also his younger son, Francois Hippolyte Caussin (1830-1898), who also studied with Gaillard before joining the family workshop; not to slight the older Nicolas Caussin (1818-1889), who learned from his father and worked independently in Paris until rejoining the family and collaborating closely with his younger brother in 1857. Nicolas’ nephew, Louis Collenot (1863-1933) would join the workshop in 1882, less than a decade before his older uncle’s death.

The distinctive Caussin aesthetic would spread across the globe through instruments made after their style produced both by and for JTL and in Saxon workshops for mass export, evidenced from perhaps just before Nicolas’ passing. These are often referred to as “School of Caussin,” as opposed to “Caussin Family” or “Caussin Workshop” instruments. Indeed, the family workshop produced numerous grades of instruments, ranging from simply constructed instruments with scribed purfling to copies of famed Italian and even English instruments, sought after for their aesthetic and characteristic timbre, with the personal family works and Francois’ production of more significant importance and value.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0509/7504/7879/products/image_d469adc7-e638-489d-911a-14b3c169298c.jpg?v=1631598722
an-english-viola-by-bryan-maynard-1979-16-1-2
An English Viola By Bryan Maynard, 1979. 16 1/2.”

A good English viola of an Amatese pattern and concise craftsmanship bearing its makers label, Bryan Maynard - 1979, a time when he both resided and worked in York; featuring a delightfully translucent golden hued varnish and choice materials, with a two piece back of medium flame and even, medium grained spruce for the top. After spending many highly prolific years in both New York and Brazil, Vladimir now resides in historic Savannah, GA, and also has workshops in both Miami, FL, and Belgrade subsequent to commissions from both the Belgrade Philharmonic and Radio Orchestra of Belgrade to equip their entire string sections with his bows. Most instruments bearing his labels are imagined reproductions of his instruments. The best examples come from the workshop of the Parisian violin-maker, Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume. They were made for Vuillaume by Honoré Derazey ((1794–1883)) and sold to the public to supply the demand for older instruments. These instruments can be distinguished from the originals, however, by discrepancies in the labels of the violin, and more importantly, the workmanship and type of the instrument.

Because no violin has ever been actually discovered to have been made by Tieffenbrucker, the current belief is that "Duiffopruggar" never actually made any violins, but rather that he made almost only lutes and sold different instruments of other makers, and his name was used to sell instruments made for Vuillaume, and to some extent, J.T.L. Nonetheless, a highly desirable piece with a Napoleonic connection, and a beautifully sculpted scroll that catches the eye from even across a room.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0509/7504/7879/files/430E0771-AE22-4108-8D9C-6E67ADDF2E93.jpg?v=1786682414
a-fine-contemporary-violin-by-stefan-valcuha
A Fine Contemporary Violin By Stefan Valcuha

A Slovakian national from Bratislava, Stefan Valcuha has both enjoyed an illustrious career and earned a reputation for exacting expertise in both restorations of instruments of the highest pedigree and provenance, and the artistic craftsmanship and vocal qualities of his personal creations. Though his father had encouraged Samuel to pursue glass blowing, he would leave his hometown of Liptau-St. Nikolaus (which would later land in Slovakia) for Pest at the age of 18 to apprentice in carpentry and cabinet making. It was there that Nemessanyi met Thomas Zach (1812-1892) and was brought into the workshop of Johann Baptist Schweitzer (1790-1865). Together, the three represent a blossoming in Hungarian violin making tradition, regarded today as some of the most important instrument makers of the school, if not the world over. Completing a four year apprenticeship in just three years, Nemessanyi would find himself in Prague working for another pupil of Schweitzer’s, Anton Sitt (1819-1878) in 1858, where he gained intimate familiarity with the works of Stradivari and Guarneri. He returned to Hungary two years later began taking his own apprentices in 1870: Karl Hermann Voigt (1850-1925), and Bela Szepessy (1856-1925). Nemessanyi married a second time in 1872 and began working fervently again at the new Hungarian capital of Budapest, with clients often waiting months for their instruments. Tbought he died shortly after a stroke at just 44 years of age, his traditions have been passed on through the generations by his apprentices, and theirs, etc., which also include Eduard Bartek, Paul Pilar, Deszo Barany, Janos Spiegel, and Mihaly Remenyi.

This elegant violin after Guarneri bears the master’s personal label, dated 1875 and is offered with a personal letter from the previous owner attesting it had been in his family for three generations, a dendrochonology report, and a Hungarian certificate from Tibor Semmelweis.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0509/7504/7879/products/image_32d2d90d-956c-41ba-8c9d-3466c48f5a62.jpg?v=1659653991
