Viola #112 By Frank Sprague, Early 1950’s. 16 1/4”

A mid-century American viola by Frank Sprague of Brookville Pennsylvania, featuring a lovely golden yellow varnish of admirable translucence, and loosely modeled after Guarneri, with slender upper bouts, and a deep boisterous voice. This is his opus 112, dating the instrument to about 1952. Sprague’s instruments are somewhat rustic, but players are rarely willing to part with them because of their sound. This viola has been setup with brass accented rosewood fittings, matching fingerboard and saddles, a freshly fit bridge, and Heliocore strings with a Jarger “A.”

Detailed measurements:
Back length: 412mm.
String length: 379mm.
Upper bout: 195mm.
Lower bout: 240mm.
